As AI has become increasingly advanced it serves to support us in a myriad of ways: from writing blog posts, to sourcing information, to supporting mental health - including ADHD support.
I’ve seen a shift in the ADHD coaching community over the last several months, suggesting that many people with ADHD are turning to AI for support rather than human centered coaching or therapy. At first glance, it can feel like coaching and AI are in competition. But the truth is they don’t have to be mutually exclusive. In fact, AI and human centered ADHD/Wellness coaching can be a powerful team.
What AI Can Do Well
AI excels at structure, reminders, and instant information. It can:
Generate task lists
Break projects into steps
Provide templates for planning or journaling
Offer quick motivation or reframing
For someone with ADHD or executive dysfunction, this kind of fast, structured feedback can feel like a lifeline in the moment.
What a Human Coach Can Do Better
But here’s the catch: AI can give you data and prompts, not lasting change. That’s where coaching comes in. A human ADHD/Wellness coach offers what no AI can replicate:
Empathy and understanding → Being truly seen in your struggles.
Accountability → Someone who checks in and celebrates progress with you.
Context and nuance → Understanding your unique values, patterns, and challenges.
Emotional safety → A space to process shame, frustration, or self-doubt that often accompany ADHD.
AI can remind you to set a timer. A coach helps you uncover why you avoid starting tasks in the first place — and what strategies actually work for you.
Why We Need Both
Think of AI as a toolbox and coaching as the skilled guide who helps you use the tools effectively.
AI can suggest “what to do.”
A coach helps you explore “why you resist doing it” — and how to integrate strategies into your real life.
When combined, you get both practical support and personal transformation.
The Future of ADHD Support
While AI can meet some needs it can’t replace the human connection, accountability, and emotional support that make coaching transformative.
So instead of choosing one or the other, imagine what’s possible when AI and coaching work hand in hand. Together, they create a pathway to clarity, growth, and lasting change.
